12 - Light, Color, Reflection
Summary: In the last unit you learned about sound waves, now you learn about light waves and very interesting and useful phenomenon of light that you see every day. To fully understand about what we see, you have to understand about how our brains process images and some physiology of the human eye. We will learn about how your brain interprets colors, electromagnetic spectrum and the same wave equation applied to light, additive and subtractive color mixing, why the sky is blue and sunsets are red, basics of LCDs, and about the concept of polarization of light. In addition, you will learn about mirrors. Specifically you will learn how our brain’s belief in light moving in straight lines allows us to see images in mirrors. We learn about Law of Reflection, Ray Tracing with principal rays simplyfiying the process to something you can do in a reasonable amount of time and without protractors. Computer simulations of principal rays allow you to investigate all possible situations involving convex and concave curved mirrors. Learn Ray Tracing well since this skill applies to lenses as well as lenses.
